3D printing in Hythe

The Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch workshops keep 1920s rolling stock running, and the same pattern repeats across the town: parts for machinery that has outlived its spares list, remade to a measurement rather than a catalogue number.

Hythe has one customer that no other town on this list has: the eastern terminus and running shed of a fifteen-inch-gauge main line. The Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch is a commercial railway with a genuinely obsolete parts list, and a scale where obsolete means gone rather than expensive. Lamp housings, coupling detail, bufferbeam fittings, cab furniture and the workshop jigs that go with them are all printable, and printing is very often the only route to them.

Detail or durability: you rarely get both

The two main Hythe job types want opposite things from a filament. Model and detail work wants the finest layer height, the crispest edges and a material that holds an edge, which means PLA, usually matte so the layer lines scatter light instead of catching it. Marine work wants toughness and ultraviolet stability, which means ASA and a thicker, coarser part.

PETG sits between them and is the sensible default when you are not sure: tougher than PLA, tolerant of sun and heat, only slightly harder to print cleanly.

We do not print load-bearing rigging, lifting or restraint components in any material. On a boat that line matters, and it is not negotiable.

Free delivery on orders over £40; under that, first-class post or collection from Folkestone. The run down the A259 takes about a quarter of an hour, so a part finishing in the morning can be in Hythe the same day when the timing works.

Fine-detail model work is the one category where we would rather you did not rush. A part at 0.08 mm layers takes roughly two and a half times as long as the same part at 0.20 mm, so a detailed component is a three-to-five-day job even though it weighs almost nothing.

For workshop customers ordering the same component repeatedly, we hold the file and the exact settings. The tenth housing is identical to the first, which for a rake of matched stock is the entire point.
