A mile and a half along the Lower Sandgate Road, serving a High Street whose trade runs on parts that stopped being made a century ago.

Sandgate has a structural supply problem, and it is the reason this page exists. The High Street carries one of the densest runs of antiques, salvage and restoration dealers on the south coast. A piece comes in worth restoring, one moulded detail is missing, the manufacturer closed in 1931, and the quantity required is one. No catalogue covers that, and no minimum-order supplier wants the enquiry.

That is exactly the shape of job printing is good at. There is no tooling cost, so a single part costs roughly what a single part should cost, and the whole cycle: measure the original, model it, print a test, check the fit, run the final: takes days rather than the weeks a pattern maker would need.

The village's other trade wants the opposite thing entirely. The seafront pubs, the Enbrook Park offices and the firms managing houses that face straight into a south-westerly need parts nobody will ever look at that simply have to survive salt.

Why almost everything outdoors here is quoted in ASA

The seafront takes weather straight off the Channel, and PLA is a poor answer to it. PLA absorbs ultraviolet badly, chalks, and goes brittle enough to snap under a thumb after a year outside. ASA was formulated as an outdoor material (it is what genuine automotive exterior trim is made from) and it behaves accordingly.

Indoors the calculation reverses. A restoration part living inside a cabinet has no ultraviolet problem and no heat problem, so PLA prints crisper detail and costs about a third less. We will tell you which one the job actually needs rather than defaulting to the expensive one.

The honest limit worth knowing before you commission anything visible: a printed part is not cast brass and will not pass for it under close inspection on a principal surface. It can be exactly the right shape, quickly, at a price that makes the repair worth doing, which for a hidden or paintable fitting is the whole job, and for an exposed showpiece is not.
