Materials

Nine filaments, and which one your part actually needs

Choosing the wrong material is the most common reason a printed part fails in service, not the printing, not the design. PLA, PETG and TPU are held on the shelf at the Folkestone workshop; the rest we order in for the job, which adds a few days and is flagged on the estimate before you commit. All of them run on the same machines that make your parts. They are compared here on the four properties that decide it: heat, sunlight, stiffness and impact.

Density matters more than it looks: it converts the volume of plastic in your part into the weight you are charged for. ABS at 1.04 g/cm³ makes a lighter part than PETG at 1.27 for the same geometry, which offsets some of its higher spool price on a large job.

Which should I pick?

Six questions, in this order

Work down the list and stop at the first one you answer yes to. It gets the right material about nine times in ten, and if your part is the tenth, describe it and we will tell you.

    Will it live outdoors, permanently?

    ASA. It is the only material here that keeps its colour and strength in UV for years. PETG is acceptable for two or three years; PLA will be brittle inside twelve months.

  2. 02

    Will it get hot: engine bay, heater, hot car?

    ABS or ASA, both good to around 95°C. PETG handles a warm dashboard at roughly 70°C. PLA is out at anything above about 55°C.

  3. 03

    Does it need to squash, seal or grip?

    TPU. Nothing else on the list flexes and returns. If it also needs to hold a dimension, the usual answer is a rigid part with a TPU insert.

  4. 04

    Must a face stay flat under clamp load?

    PLA-CF for indoor fixtures, PETG-CF if it will also be knocked about or used outside. Both need the hardened nozzle, which is already fitted.

  5. 05

    Will a customer look at it and hold it?

    PLA Matte, straight off the plate. On a batch it beats sanding standard PLA on both cost and consistency. PLA Silk if you want the part to read as metal.

  6. 06

    None of the above. It is a prototype or an indoor fixture?

    PLA Basic. Cheapest, most accurate, quickest to print. Prove the geometry in PLA, then move to the material the finished part actually needs.

In detail

What each filament is actually for

Written for someone specifying a material for a part with a job to do, rather than for someone browsing colours.

PLA Basic

£14.00/kg

The default. Cheapest, prints crisply, holds fine detail, but it softens in a hot car and goes brittle outdoors after a year or so.

The default, and the right answer more often than people expect. It is the cheapest filament we hold, it prints the most accurately, and it holds fine detail better than anything else on this list. Its weakness is heat: a part left on a dashboard in July will deform, and a part left outdoors goes brittle within a year or so. For prototypes, indoor fixtures and anything being checked for fit before committing to a material, that does not matter.

  • Fit-check prototypes
  • Display models and props
  • Jigs and fixtures used indoors
  • Anything where cost matters more than durability

Avoid it for

A hot car, a sunny windowsill, or anything that gets knocked

PLA Matte

£15.00/kg

PLA with the shine taken out. Layer lines all but disappear, so a part looks finished straight off the plate with no sanding.

Mechanically identical to PLA Basic, with the shine taken out. The matte surface scatters light so layer lines all but disappear and a part looks finished straight off the plate. On a batch that a customer will see, it is far cheaper than sanding standard PLA: a smoothed finish adds more bench time per part than the plastic costs.

  • Parts a customer will actually hold
  • Architectural and terrain models
  • Retail display pieces
  • Photography props

Avoid it for

Any part where strength matters more than appearance

PLA Silk

£19.00/kg

High-gloss, almost metallic sheen. Looks striking on smooth curves, but it hides detail and is weaker than standard PLA.

A display material. The gloss reads as metal on a smooth curve, which sells an award, a trophy or a retail piece. It costs more than plain PLA, hides detail rather than showing it, and bonds between layers less well, so it is the weakest thing we print. Choose it for how a part looks and nothing else.

  • Gifts, keepsakes and awards
  • Decorative vases and ornaments
  • Cosplay pieces that want a metal look

Avoid it for

Functional parts and anything with fine surface detail

PETG HF

£16.00/kg

Tougher and more heat-resistant than PLA: the default for anything that lives outdoors or in a car.

The workhorse for anything that has to survive. It takes an impact by deforming rather than shattering, tolerates a warm engine bay or a sunlit window, and lasts years outdoors. The trade is precision: PETG prints slightly less crisply than PLA and strings more, so small lettering and sharp detail come out softer. For a bracket, a mount, an outdoor enclosure or a replacement clip, it is almost always the right call.

Best for

  • Replacement parts and brackets
  • Outdoor mounts and enclosures
  • Parts that flex rather than snap
  • Anything near a window or a dashboard

Avoid it for

Fine text and crisp small features. It prints softer than PLA

ABS

£17.00/kg

Handles real heat and can be vapour-smoothed or glued solvent-tight. Needs the enclosure, and large flat parts can warp.

Chosen for two specific reasons: real heat resistance, and the fact that it can be solvent-welded and vapour-smoothed to a glass finish. It runs enclosed on the Bambu Lab P1P, and large flat parts can lift at the corners as they cool, so the geometry has to suit it. If the part sits near a heater, a motor or an engine, this or ASA is the answer.

Best for

  • Parts that sit near an engine or a heater
  • Housings that will be solvent-bonded
  • Automotive trim clips

Avoid it for

Large flat parts, and anything left in sunlight

ASA

£19.00/kg

ABS that does not go chalky in sunlight. This is the one for a part that will sit on a roof, a boat or a garden wall for years.

It costs more than PETG and needs the enclosure, so it is worth specifying only when the exposure genuinely warrants it, but for permanent outdoor fittings on the Kent coast, it does.

  • Marine and coastal mounts
  • Signage exposed to weather
  • Solar and aerial brackets

Avoid it for

Indoor parts where PETG would do the job for less

TPU 95A

£25.00/kg

Flexible rubber-like filament. Bends, squashes and springs back. It prints slowly and runs on a direct-drive machine for the cleanest result.

Rubber in filament form. It compresses, bends double and returns, and it resists abrasion better than any rigid material here. That makes it the answer for gaskets, bump stops, vibration feet, protective sleeves and soft jaws that grip a finished surface without marking it. It prints slowly and it will not hold a dimension under load, so it is a specific tool rather than a general one.

Best for

  • Gaskets, seals and bump stops
  • Protective cases and grips
  • Vibration-damping feet
  • Replacement rubber bushes

Anything that must hold its shape under load

PLA-CF

£30.00/kgHardened nozzle

Carbon-fibre filled PLA. Much stiffer and dimensionally steadier than plain PLA, with a matte-black technical finish.

Carbon fibre in a PLA base. The fibres stop the polymer creeping, so a flat face stays flat and a jig holds its geometry under clamp pressure far better than plain PLA. It is the stiffest thing we print and also the most brittle. It will shatter rather than bend. It is abrasive, so it runs on a hardened nozzle. Ideal for fixtures, gauges and mounts that must not move.

Best for

  • Jigs and fixtures that must not flex
  • Drone and RC frames
  • Camera and tooling mounts
  • Parts where a flat face must stay flat

Avoid it for

Impact loading, and any part that needs to flex at all

PETG-CF

£32.00/kgHardened nozzle

Our toughest option: PETG's impact resistance plus carbon fibre's stiffness. Expensive, and worth it when a part has to survive.

The toughest option we hold: PETG's impact resistance with carbon fibre's stiffness and dimensional stability. It is the material for a short run of end-use parts, a load-bearing bracket, or workshop tooling that gets dropped. It is also the most expensive filament on the list, so it earns its place on parts that have to survive rather than on parts that merely have to exist.

  • Short-run end-use parts

Avoid it for

Cost-sensitive work where PETG would already be enough

Colours, and materials we do not hold

Black, white, grey and natural are held in PLA and PETG as standard, which covers most work with no waiting. Anything else is ordered in and usually arrives within two to three working days, at no extra cost unless the colour only exists in a specialist finish.

We do not print multi-colour parts on a single body. Where a part needs two colours the cleaner answer is almost always two parts joined, and we will quote it that way. We also do not hold nylon, polycarbonate or any filled engineering polymer beyond the two carbon-filled grades above: if your part genuinely needs one, say so and we will tell you where to send it rather than substitute something weaker.
